From tiny start ups and skateboard parks to global manufacturing companies and University Business Schools, I’ve popped my head into a million different meeting rooms to talk to people about the good, the bad and the downright ridiculous things they get up to when they are at work.
I started out small in HR - start ups, social enterprises, before scaling the ladder and getting my feet wet in bigger and bigger organisations.
The bigger they got, the more disheartened I became. The corporate world of big business with thousands of employees, well, that’s not the world for me.
I’m in the world of HR right now because business is people.
It’s relationships. It’s getting along. It’s understanding. (I have a degree in Social Anthropology, a Masters in Anthropological Research and I’m very nosey curious so yeah, people are kinda my thing).
I work with busy business owners and I am a busy business owner and I know it can be great and I know it can be utterly rubbish… and I also know that the majority of the reasons that keep you awake at night will have a first and last name.
Let’s just say, I’ve seen a lot of stuff go down and I’m here to share the knowledge.
I’ve worked in HR for a long time and I see you.
9 hills I will die on:
HR is a business tool, not a boring task.
Small businesses pack a punch - you are never too small to think HR.
Mess is inevitable so you may as well embrace it.
Learning is forever - always be curious.
Fun belongs in business - just less cringe please.
Ask the awkward questions, even when it’s uncomfortable.
Empathy wins every time - trust and loyalty pay dividends that spreadsheets can’t calculate.
Community matters - so lets stick together.
Celebrate the wins because perfection is a myth.
If you’re into this then we could be a dream-team…
It’s OK if you’re not a cat person.
I am.
